The effect of adjuvant oral irrigation on the management of peri-implant mucositis

The prevalence of peri-implant diseases is rising along with the overall number of dental implants. Peri-implant mucositis, which affects 64.6% of all implant patients, is the most typical biological issue surrounding dental implants.

Peri-implant mucositis, if left untreated, can develop into peri-implantitis, which causes progressive soft tissue and bone loss. Effective methods to establish and maintain wholesome peri-implant conditions are necessary for the primary prevention of peri-implantitis, which includes the treatment of peri-implant mucositis.

Since peri-implant mucositis can be treated by removing plaque, adequate mechanical plaque control is necessary to stop peri-implant diseases from developing and worsening.

Studies have demonstrated that the adjuvant use of an oral irrigator containing 0.06% CHX in addition to mechanical biofilm removal and oral hygiene instruction may decrease the presence and severity of peri-implant mucositis after 12 weeks.
